The Treasury's Fiona - Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Economics (Hons), La Trobe University

As a graduate in Treasury’s Macroeconomic Group, you get the opportunity to work on a wide range of economic issues, both domestic and international. I am currently working in the International Economy Division where we monitor, research and forecast the global economy, brief the Treasurer and other Ministers on international economic conditions, as well as participate in international engagement such as APEC.

The training and support I’ve received both through Treasury’s graduate development program and within my unit have been highly comprehensive covering a wide range of skills, including writing, presentation and computer skills, as well as policy workshops and seminar series.

What’s more, the current economic climate has certainly made my introduction to Treasury a rich and stimulating experience. There’s no better time to sink your teeth into some really interesting, high-level economic and policy issues, and there’s never a boring day in the office.

Work matters aside, moving to Canberra has been much better than I expected! There’s always something to do, be it sporting, social or cultural, and starting as part of a graduate group means you have an instant network of friends. The support of my colleagues and fellow graduates has made for a smooth and stress-free transition from university to working life, with a whole lot of fun thrown into the process.

About Treasury…

Treasury has a rich history as the government’s premier adviser on economic policy and today has 950 employees at the forefront of Australian economic analysis and policy development. By providing advice to the Treasurer and the Australian Government, Treasury’s work directly impacts the lives of all Australians.

No matter the issue of the day, Treasury is involved. From market regulation to implementing changes to Australia’s tax system, macro policy settings to microeconomic reform, trade agreements to the global financial crisis, we play a key role.

The diversity of our business is one of our greatest strengths. You could find yourself working in a number of roles, from economic forecasting and promoting stable financial systems and markets in Australia, to designing tax legislation or developing social policies that improve the wellbeing of all Australians. Whatever you do, you will be exposed to challenging and interesting work where you can use your current skills as well as developing new ones.

The Graduate Development Program…

For the first 12 months of your career at Treasury you will participate in the Graduate Development Program. The Program offers a range of development opportunities including in-house and external training, familiarisation tours and participation in key events, such as Budget lock-up and post-Budget question time.

Based in Canberra, Treasury offers a single placement in your graduate year, during which you will be supported by senior Treasury staff through extensive on the job training. Our approach is to treat graduates as colleagues, not trainees, which means our graduates have the opportunity to tackle the most current issues and undertake a wide range of interesting projects, gaining a wealth of experience along the way.
