OneSteel - Summer job leads to graduate career

Whilst on vacation work, Isha gained valuable experience and played a major part in contributing to projects including building the entire functional area for one of the company’s businesses within a SAP environment. This included writing complex codes and also gaining an understanding of how things work in SAP. She also participated in OneSteel’s Summer Student Development Day, where vacation students from around the country were flown to Sydney or Melbourne for a career development day that included guest speaker and OneSteel Financial Controller Anthony Brooks speaking about his leadership journey, as well as workshops on personality types and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, and ‘Intrapreneurship’ – being entrepreneurial at work.
Isha says the experience of spending a summer with a top ASX-listed Australian company gave her a definite career kickstart:
“The OneSteel vacation work program proved to be a great learning experience as I had the opportunity to learn from highly experienced and supporting team members and also apply my university studies to a practical scenario.”
Isha was joined on the program by students undertaking summer roles in marketing, accounting, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, process engineering, information systems and more in diverse locations including Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, Brisbane and Whyalla (SA).
OneSteel will again offer vacation work this summer, with applications opening on 16 October at and closing on 8 November. The selection process includes an online application, psychometric testing and phone interviews; with successful students offered an approximately 10 week paid placement, and if required, a ‘living away from home allowance’ for those relocating interstate.http://careers.onesteel.com
Isha’s great work on the program secured her a permanent position on OneSteel’s graduate program. Her advice for this year’s candidates?
“This is a wonderful opportunity to start your career as it gives you a flavour of what working in such a big organisation is like. I personally think that students should not give it a miss - and if you get in - totally dedicate yourself to make the most of it. Dedication and hard work is the key!”
