Hands-on experience with Monadelphous

Hands-on experience the key to success for graduate
Leading Australian engineering group, Monadelphous, is well known as a place where graduates can gain invaluable hands-on experience. With an enviable reputation for the delivery of safe, reliable and cost-effective engineering service solutions to its customers, the company provides construction, maintenance and industrial services to the resources, energy and infrastructure sectors.
As Michael Martyn nears the completion of his three year graduate program, he takes a moment here to look back at his graduate experience with Monadelphous.
A mechanical engineer and a graduate of The University of Queensland, Michael selected Monadelphous because of the diversity of projects the company undertakes and its reputation as a place where graduates can gain hands on experience.
“I have enjoyed all the projects that I have worked on which have ranged from the construction of process plants to water treatment facilities, coal handling and iron ore handling facilities. The variety of work and the opportunity to travel and work in locations such as remote WA and Northern QLD, were some of the big drawcards in choosing Monadelphous for my graduate program.”
It may not be for everyone, warns Michael, but he believes that working on-site has helped him progress as an engineer by gaining experience and exposure to many facets of the resources industry in Australia.
“Working on-site is great. It gives you the opportunity to see a drawing become reality. The things we construct on-site are generally BIG things, and seeing it completed gives you a great amount of job satisfaction and pride. Site-based work is highly beneficial and I have gained most of my technical knowledge as a result of being a site engineer,” says Michael.
As well as offering a graduate program in accounting and engineering, Monadelphous offers vacation experience to penultimate year civil, mechanical, electrical and mechatronic engineering students. The company aims to develop long term relationships with those who demonstrate their aptitude and enthusiasm and have a ‘can do’ attitude.
The three year Monadelphous Graduate Program offers mentoring and coaching, work rotation between projects and teams, ongoing technical training and development, the opportunity to achieve chartered status through the relevant professional body and performance-based salary reviews.
Monadelphous seek graduates who not only meet the technical requirements of a role but are also well aligned with the company’s culture and corporate values. According to Michael, Monadelphous is the right place for graduates who are “professional, enthusiastic, sociable, down to earth and motivated”.
“Monadelphous has a real family feel about it, with all managers being very approachable. I can go to my managers and colleagues for a chat about anything, whether it’s work related or not. It really is a positive and enjoyable environment to work in.”
After the completion of his graduate program Michael plans to remain with Monadelphous and continue to progress towards his chartered engineering status. Michael is confident he will be able to achieve his long-term goals of becoming a senior project engineer and eventually a project manager, whilst continuing to enjoy the combination of on-site/office-based work with Monadelphous.
Applications for the 2010 Monadelphous graduate program close Friday 1 May 2009. Monadelphous accepts applications from Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents only.
