Graduate profile: Emma Kitching, Zinifex

What attracted you about the Zinifex graduate program?
I had undertaken vacation work with Zinifex during my studies and the experience was extremely positive. The inclusive, enthusiastic and flexible culture of Zinifex was appealing as well as its focus on safety, the environment and community involvement.
The graduate program being offered was also attractive as it involved a small group of graduates across a range of disciplines and included site rotation opportunities and professional development programs.
You are in the second year of the program now -- what have been some of the "highlights" for you so far?
The experience and exposure I have been able to gain has been incredible. As a graduate you have the opportunity to rotate through a number of roles within each of the departments. There was the added bonus of being able to influence my professional development according to my personal interests and career goals; I am particularly interested in sustainability and mine planning and was able to rotate through both production based and project roles. In particular, I was involved in a pre-feasibility study which enabled me to use all the theory learnt at university.
What kind of mentoring opportunities have you been offered as part of the graduate program?
From day one every graduate is linked with a technical mentor, who is a senior member of the Zinifex team from the same discipline. We're also encouraged and guided to select a career mentor once onsite to assist with our technical development and for ongoing coaching.
Do you spend much time with other graduates?
There is a lot of interaction with other graduates through group projects, professional development courses, the biannual graduate workshops and social events. The other graduates are a great support network and we are frequently sharing our experiences from working with different teams.
What is the best think about working at Zinifex?
Zinifex is a small company and as such I feel like an important and valued member of the team. It is also a company that is growing and offering numerous opportunities with the proposed merger with Oxiana and other projects in development.
What would you like to do after completing the graduate program?
There are many opportunities available with Zinifex going forward. I hope to continue gaining experience with the company focusing on mine planning and sustainable development.
