For a real career... Sedgman Graduate Program 2012

Life has been pretty good for Michael Price since graduating from university in 2008. Not only did he star in and win Channel 7’s Beauty and the Geek show, he has completed the Sedgman graduate program in engineering.
Sedgman offers a structured two-year graduate program with the opportunity to rotate through different business units and locations including placements at its Australian and international sites.
“Doing the Sedgman graduate program gives you an appreciation of the large amount of work that goes into any engineering project,” Michael said.
Now an electrical engineer in the projects group, Michael is working on the design of a coal handling and preparation plant. As part of the graduate program, he spent time in central Queensland participing in a site shutdown and upgrade and credits this as one of the highlights.
“The hands-on experience on site was really valuable. I loved getting my hands dirty and seeing what life is like on a coal site,” Michael said. “After that I was procuring equipment for Mongolia’s first coal preparation plant, which presented some unique problems that would not have existed for an Australian project.”
Sedgman’s Graduate Program exposes participants to the multi-facited nature of the Sedgman business and provides them with experience across a variety of its offices and site locations. “I am going to site again for the commissioning of a project I’m involved in and a few of my fellow graduates are working overseas now so I am looking forward to that opportunity one day,” Michael said.
“I would definitely recommend the Sedgman program, particularly to those leaving uni who are unsure exactly what they want to specialise in, but also to others who think they do know, because it is still important to understand the other areas of the business, and you never know, you might change your mind.”
So what was better – the Sedgman graduate program or winning Beauty and the Geek? “Beauty and the Geek was an amazing and rewarding experience, but the last thing the world needs is another washed-up reality star trying to live off their 15 minutes of fame! For a real career, Sedgman’s definitely the better option.”
“I get to use my brain and problem-solving skills, instead of relying on my good looks, fashion sense and dance skills,” Michael joked.
