Job Hunting - A Checklist to Success

There are many actions you can take to improve the outcomes of your job search. Use this checklist to help along the way!

1. Start early

Undergraduate work experience can be beneficial to developing your skills, networking and résumé, even if it’s not in an area directly related to your interests or study.

2. Visit your careers service

Your university careers service can be invaluable in providing the resources and advice you need to find the right career.

3. Do your research

Study the industries you’re considering for employment. Look at the current news and employment market; potential growth and development in the sector; compare major players and professional bodies; and investigate the career paths that exist.

Research specific employers. You’ll be prepared for interviews and have an edge in the competitive job market.

4. Network

Talk to family, friends, careers service and industry contacts. Advice and mentoring from those around you can be highly advantageous in expanding your options.

5. Your résumé & cover letter

There’s no excuse for errors! Read each application before sending it to potential employers. It should be personalised for each employer, free of grammatical and spelling errors, and in a format that is easy to read. A second set of eyes is invaluable – ask your careers service, family and friends for feedback!

6. Market yourself

First impressions count! In any interaction with a potential employer – be it in person, on the phone or via email – be polite, be professional, be thoughtful and be confident.

7. Interviews

Be prepared! If you snag an interview, do your homework on the company and refresh your knowledge of your résumé, skills and experiences to better anticipate responses to questions. Dress the part too – it shows you’re serious about the job!

8. Smile & have fun

Job hunting can be tough, but the process is a great way to learn about yourself. Be patient and positive, and take advantage of the opportunities presented to you!
