ANZ Graduate Profile - Danay Lea

View ANZ's GO Profile

Danay joined ANZ as a 2007 Finance Grad, after completing a Masters of Professional Accounting. Prior to that, he completed a Bachelor of Arts (Double Major: International Relations and Politics & Policy Studies). Shortly after completing the ANZ Graduate Program, Danay packed his bags once more and moved to Singapore to assume the role of Manager, Management Reporting and Analysis, in ANZ Singapore.

Tell us a little bit about your rotations while on the Graduate Program.

My first rotation was with Group Financial Policy where I assisted the Policy team in areas such as share-based payments, software capitalisation and regulatory submissions. It was an excellent role to start with as it gave me an overall understanding of ANZ's structure as well as tying the theory learnt in university.

My second rotation was in Treasury Finance which was much closer to the 'business' and involved preparation of daily Profit and Loss reports, completing journals and conducting reconciliations. It was a great contrast to the Policy role as this was more of a nuts and bolts experience.

What was the transition like between being a graduate and your current permanent role?

Transitioning between anything is always a bit tough at first. Inevitably you go through the period where you feel completely out of your depth and start to wonder what it is that you have gotten yourself into, but the important thing is to cut yourself some slack and just start with the basics. Five months has passed very quickly and now I feel like I am getting a good understanding.

What tips would you give candidates when choosing a graduate employer?

There are many things to consider but I would suggest taking into account the following factors: Professional Development, Culture, Mentoring, Diversity and Integrity. Whilst where friends are working and salary are important, these things give way pretty quickly to working life within the organisation. In considering organisations I focused on organisations where I could see the possibility of experiencing different areas and utilising different skill sets.
