Jody Herley is flying high with BHP Billiton

Jody Herley, Bachelor of Mining Engineering graduate, is working at BHP Billiton’s Cannington underground silver, lead and zinc mine located in northwest Queensland. She is currently working in a Scheduling role, planning underground operations.
“My current project is the Mining Budget which is about a two-month long process of developing the two-year mining plan. It’s keeping me really busy!”
“I love the fly-in, fly-out lifestyle! My roster here is eight days on and six days off which is really good. Having six days off every fortnight means that I can travel on my break to visit friends and family or go on a holiday somewhere.”
Jody says that BHP Billiton’s excellent reputation in the mining industry, recommendations from other graduates and the variety of opportunities on offer is what attracted her, but it was the strength of BHP Billiton’s Foundations for Graduates Program that sealed the deal.
“I liked that BHP Billiton had a really structured graduate program and that they invest a lot into helping develop their graduates which is great to see as you don’t find that sort of thing with every company.”
“The Foundations for Graduates Program is great. There’s a lot of focus on understanding yourself and your style of learning and leading. You also spend a lot of time developing practical skills for the workplace and learning how to put them into use in different situations. It isn’t just lectures and PowerPoint presentations.”
“The main highlight of the Program for me is definitely the five-day residential in Melbourne. It’s a really intense week but you get to meet heaps of graduates from other operations around Australia which is great for networking.”
