Meltwater Group: Kick Start Your Career in International Management

From our humble origins in 2001 as a 2-man organisation to the 700+ people we are today, Meltwater Group has always prided itself in finding outstanding people to aid our expansion. We have never been afraid to employ graduates who show potential over experience, and our graduate roles have been central to our global expansion thus far.
Meltwater Group is committed to challenging the status quo through disruptive technologies. A global leader in the field of online media monitoring, and we are now delivering other Software as a Service (SaaS) tools in new media such as social media monitoring and search engine optimisation. We employ new staff with the view of developing our future generation of management. Therefore, we invest time in developing their skills in business development and people management – the two most important areas needed if any business is to succeed and grow.
At Meltwater, you will receive responsibility and autonomy from day one as you start within the sales and business development unit. You will develop your own client portfolio and work with organisations on their media monitoring needs. Through sales, you will develop skills in negotiation, presentation and analysis, and learn how to establish solid business relationships with senior executives from all industries.
Upon mastering the sales methodology, you will progress to a Sales Manager level, where your responsibilities will include:
- Training and guiding new staff.
- Assisting in recruitments for your office.
- Participating in regular strategy meetings.
Here your career can take an interesting turn as we look to utilise your skills by sending you to one of our newer markets to help us establish our operations there. You can strive to become a Managing Director of your own office, which will teach you everything a small business needs to operate, or you can move laterally as we grow our internal departments in areas such as finance, HR, communications, client relations and recruitment.
Joining a start-up during their expansion phase is exciting and can be a beneficial career move for graduates for two main reasons:
- You will gain more exposure to the inner workings of the business.
- You will be given more responsibility at a faster pace than usual as the company relies on the development of your skills to help them achieve their goals.
Without our staff, Meltwater would still be an organisation of 2 people in Norway! We now need your skills to help us continue our expansion in the Asia Pacific region.
Graduate Profile

David Hickey, Bachelor of Arts (Media & Communications), University of Sydney, 2007
When did you join Meltwater?
March 2008, Sydney office.
Why did you choose Meltwater?
I had never heard of Meltwater or even really understood sales. I had always been passionate about advertising. However, when I graduated I began favouring the gift of the gab over the pen and started having second thoughts about my chosen profession.
I applied for about half a dozen jobs after leaving university and eventually was offered two very different ones: the first as an International Management Trainee with Meltwater in Sydney, and the second as an Account Executive at a leading global advertising industry. My university degree would have me choose the latter, as would my parents, and so I was faced with a dilemma. This was the start of my career and I put a lot of pressure on myself to make the right decision.
I chose Meltwater because of the start-up feel. It was small enough for me to really make an impression, and promised an accelerated career track for people that could prove to be successful very quickly. This struck a chord with me, and when I looked across the room at the people who were interviewing me, they were young energetic and basically just like me.
What have you learned since being with Meltwater?
You are never too young to be a leader and that failure is a better teacher than success.
Where are you now?
I have been the Managing Director of the Hong Kong office since February 2009.
We are recruiting for our Sydney office in October 2010. Please forward your applications to elinor.rodger@meltwater.com.
