Energise your Career with the Woodside Graduate Program

Woodside’s story is one of growth.

Woodside was formed in 1954, focused initially on oil exploration off Australia’s south coast. Major natural gas discoveries off the Western Australian coast in the 1970s changed the company’s direction, and today Woodside is one of the world’s preeminent producers of LNG.

In the early 1960s we turned our attention to Western Australia, where we were awarded exploration rights over more than 367,000km2 off north-western Australia (what is known as the North West Shelf). Exploration drilling began in the late 60s, with major gas and condensate discoveries made in 1971. These fields contained reserves of nearly 50 trillion cubic feet of gas, providing the basis of the $A27 billion North West Shelf Project, Australia's largest resource project!

A contract with the State Energy Commission of Western Australia for the supply of domestic gas to industries and homes was signed in 1980. Today, the North West Shelf Project is Western Australia’s largest producer of domestic gas and provides about 65% of WA’s domestic market.

In the late 80s the first shipment of liquefied natural gas from the North West Shelf Project made its way to Japan. The Project is now one of the world’s largest producers of LNG with more than 3000 cargoes delivered to the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

Woodside’s vision to be a World Class producer of LNG is reinforced through the Pluto foundation project which is on track for first LNG in 2011.

We are already planning for an expansion of our Pluto project, and are seeking to develop a further two LNG projects – Browse in Australia’s Kimberley region and Sunrise off the northern coast of Darwin, Northern Territory.

Woodside doesn’t just produce LNG; we also produce natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, condensate and oil for customers in Australia and elsewhere.

While our gas resources guarantee Woodside’s future, it is our 3500 talented people who have driven our reputation for agility, innovation and success.
