WorkSafe Victoria - Work you can believe in
==============================================
Sophie has work she can believe in

Sophie Torrens is a Graduate Communications Consultant from our 2009-10 intake. After completing a Bachelor of Public Relations in 2008, Sophie is now half way through our program and shares some of her experiences so far as a WorkSafe graduate.

Why did you want to work at WorkSafe?
It sounds like a cliché, but I really wanted to work somewhere that made a positive contribution to the wider community. WorkSafe’s corporate values and vision really resonated with me. I’d always had a strong interest in health promotion, so for me WorkSafe was a perfect fit. Of course, the fantastic learning and development opportunities offered were a huge bonus!
What was involved in the application process for the graduate program?
The process consisted of an online application, an assessment centre and a panel interview. The experience was a bit nerve-wracking, but so worth it. It’s really just a chance for WorkSafe to get to know you, your skills and personality.
What does the graduate program involve?
Each graduate has a unique program designed for them. Basically, the program allows you to rotate throughout the organisation, depending on your interests and skills. The rotations can vary in length and can be quite flexible. You are exposed to a huge range of projects and get to work with heaps of different teams.
What rotations have you done so far?
All of my rotations have been fantastic. I’ve spent time with teams in both internal and external communications. I’ve done everything from events, publications, ministerial briefs, photo shoots and media releases; to writing and rolling out a number of different communication strategies. The work is very diverse.
What are you enjoying most about the program?
It's great being part of an organisation that really makes a difference. The graduate program exposes you to a huge range of experiences and opportunities to learn. The work is interesting and challenging, and rotating through the business means constantly working on new, exciting projects. The best part about the graduate program at WorkSafe is the people. The organisation has such a friendly, positive culture and I get to work alongside people who are really talented and passionate about what they do.
What do you hope to get out of the program?
Valuable experience in both internal and external communications and a range of opportunities to develop important new skills.
Tell us some of the benefits of working at WorkSafe?
Flexible working hours, great learning and development opportunities, social club, and the chance to participate in WorkSafe’s fitness squads are just some of the benefits of being a WorkSafe employee.
In three words, how would you describe your graduate experience so far?
Challenging, unique, fun!
What advice would you give those considering applying for the WorkSafe graduate program this year?
Absolutely go for it – I’d highly recommend the program. Take the time to submit a great application that really reflects your personality and skills.
