High Voltage Careers with TransGrid
TransGrid’s Graduate Development Program

Daniel Burn has been working for TransGrid since he finished his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Power) at Sydney University two years ago. When he goes home every night he switches his lights on along with thousands of other people across the state.
The only difference is that Daniel helps to make it happen.
How many places can you say play a part in a billion dollar investment program?
TransGrid owns the New South Wales high-voltage transmission network, comprising of over 12,400 kilometres of transmission lines, 82 substations and switchyards, with operating voltages as high as 500,000 volts.
TransGrid Graduates have an important job to do from planning for load growth to finding innovative network solutions and delivering critical assets.
Ever coordinated the replacement of a 150 ton transformer? Daniel has had firsthand experience.
He’s also been part of a team responsible for emergency repairs and investigations as well as coordinating new connections to the transmission grid.
Daniel has the added benefit of working with world class Engineers who will guide and support him throughout his development.
“Almost everything I have learnt at uni has new meaning now that I can apply it at work. The variety of jobs that TransGrid engineers do is amazing so you really get to see how it fits together,” Daniel said.
“The people here have so much experience and are really keen to pass on their knowledge; they are genuinely interested in my development.”
A Program for Success
A typical Graduate spends about two to three years within the TransGrid Graduate Program after which they are assisted in moving into more specialised roles within the organisation. Daniel has himself recently moved to a more senior position within TransGrid.
TransGrid’s Graduate Program is an integrated rotational program, in a work environment that ensures Graduates are continually challenged and stimulated. Graduates rotate through different areas of the organisation so that they can experience a range of roles and activities. These rotations ensure that TransGrid Graduates get to know the business inside-out and can play a real role now and into the future.
TransGrid currently has Electrical Engineering Graduates at various stages within the program. In fact, with twenty-five new starters in 2009 the program is really taking shape.
There are also a number of Civil Engineering Graduates and Accounting Graduates who work at TransGrid and have their own tailored Graduate Development programs.
With offices in the Sydney CBD, Western Sydney and regional NSW, including Newcastle and Yass, there is plenty of experience on offer.
Graduates can also expect to be exposed to a range of other areas key to their development such as Leadership, Environmental Management, Safety, and Customers Relations.
