Bachelor of Commerce/Laws (Finance) with a Diploma in Languages (French), University of Queensland
In my penultimate year of study I applied for BDO’s vacation program as I was extremely interested in both the firm and the opportunity to work in a couple of the firm’s divisions during the four week program.
I was extremely impressed with BDO’s interest in providing me with the best vacation work experience possible. At my request, I was able to work in Business Recovery & Insolvency for the length of the vacation program, instead of rotating to another division, as I enjoyed working in BRI so much.
I was offered a graduate position upon completion of the vacation program and commenced one month later as an undergraduate.
My Experience at BDO
As a vacation student, I was given the opportunity to learn and perform tasks that a graduate would perform.
I was given my own tasks to complete along with the support and training to complete them, allowing me to get a feel for what life as a graduate would be like.
I was also invited to a number of BDO’s social events while I was a vacation student which provided me with an excellent opportunity to get to know my team members and fellow vacation students.
My best advice for you
During the application and interview process, I received extremely helpful advice from UQ’s Career and Recruitment Centre for Business, Economics and Law.
I would advise all students to contact their university’s/TAFE’s career counselling service as they have an excellent working knowledge of what accounting firms are looking for in their applicants.
