Analyst – Tax Consulting, Pitcher Partners
Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws. Monash University
In my final year at university, I attended several career fairs and asked family and friends for their thoughts on what were good graduate programs that would develop my professional skills when I first entered the work force. I was recommended Pitcher Partners by one of my university lecturers and some family members on the basis that Pitcher Partners had a fantastic culture and an excellent graduate program that would set a great foundation for me. I applied to join their tax consulting team because I had previously studied taxation law at university and enjoyed the intellectual challenge it presented as well as the dynamic, constantly changing nature of the industry.
My Experience with Pitcher Partners
It may sound like a cliché, but no two days are the same as a tax graduate at Pitcher Partners. You can get involved in all types of matters, from tax compliance to preparation of tax advice and applying for rulings to the ATO. This has allowed me to learn about many different areas of taxation law as well as learn about many different clients and industries. In moving from university to full time work, I did find that I missed the free time that flexible university timetables provided me (especially the long weekends I used to have). For me, that was the biggest hurdle to get over when transitioning from university.
My best advice for you
My advice to prospective graduates is to take advantage of opportunities such as vacationer programs and work experience programs as this is a great way of learning about whether you enjoy working for a particular firm and industry. It is also a great way for an employer to get to know you and will stand you in great stead when applying in the future for graduate roles. I would also try to learn as much as possible about the role you would like to apply for, through talking with friends and family who are in that particular industry, or asking lecturers, or even through sending an email to a contact that you made at a career fair.

Michael – Previous Vacationer – Business Advisory and Assurance
“Calling a program a great experience is a bit of a cliché, but the Pitcher Partners vacation program really was! Not only did I gain exposure to the type of work completed in the industry, which I could then apply during my final year of university, but the people and culture at the firm made the month really enjoyable. PP staff were always willing to help and give up their time which allowed all the vacationers to benefit from their knowledge and feel welcome. The program was the reason I decided to become a graduate at Pitcher Partners rather than some of the other firms.”
