IT Graduate, Australian Taxation Office
Master of Technology (Information technology). Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne)
I studied Information Systems at university before joining the ATO. I always thought working in IT would be purely technical however; during a typical day I get to collaborate with a range of stakeholders and clients to resolve issues and work on many interesting challenges while exploring new solution options making my days engaging and rewarding.
My Experience at the Australian Taxation Office
Since I have joined the ATO, I have been working on a variety of projects in different business areas. Currently I am working as a Business/Test Analyst within Major programs and my role is to ensure system functionality aligns with specifications. The work (and workload!) varies every day; I get to explore the end-to-end process of software development to pin-point the issue or bug in the system. The best part of my job is that I can play with and have a say on the products (such as the multi-awarded myTax15 product) before it gets released to the wider Australian community.
My transition from university to professional work was challenging and I worked in the retail sector for a while after I completed my degree. I received on-the-job training and weekly development sessions. My customer-service oriented attitude provided me with some good skills and helped me to get into a good work rhythm quickly.
My best advice for you
ATO is a land of opportunity. There are wide-ranging roles in varied business lines. Be open to every opportunity. Challenge yourself – there is something new to learn here, every day!
Applications for the ATO’s Australian Grad program open March 2016.
