Accountant – Assurance, EY
Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics, University of Western Australia
I have been with EY in Assurance for just over one year. I completed vacationer work in June 2013 and then commenced as a graduate in May 2014. The vacationer work offered me a good insight into Assurance and the culture at EY.
My Experience at EY
Very rarely do I start my day in the EY office – most days will start out at the client site that I am engaged to work on at that time. Many of our clients are in the Perth CBD but sometimes we drive to a client or make our way to West Perth or Subiaco. I will meet up with my team and we will discuss what we have planned to complete on that day – after a short coffee break that is! On any given day, I could be working by myself, with one other person or up to a team of seven to eight people, depending on the client. This is one of the most enjoyable things about my job – no engagement is similar and no team is ever the same so I am constantly being exposed to different industries, new issues and alternating working styles.
Another highlight of my job is interacting with the client. Whether it’s the Accounts Payable Clerk or the CFO, I thoroughly enjoy gaining an understanding of our client’s business and broadening my client network. Something I was surprised by when I first joined EY was that this interaction with the client is from day one; daunting at first, but highly rewarding as your progress.
After lunch, I may need to head back to the office for a meeting or some sort of social event. I really enjoy attending the recruiting events that we hold in our offices, or externally, where I get the chance to meet potential vacationers or new graduates.
My best advice for you
During your vacation work at EY, you should make the most of every opportunity you get, introducing yourself to as many people as possible and asking questions along the way – the teams you work with, buddies and fellow vacationers you meet during your vacation work could be your colleagues in the future, so enjoy the experience and soak it all up!
