The New Zealand Refining Company is New Zealand’s only oil refinery. We process 120,000 barrels of crude oil per day at Marsden Point near Whangarei.

We have been around for 40 years and in that time our refinery has been continuously upgraded so that we can produce cleaner fuels for future generations.

The fuels we produce meet 50 per cent of NZ’s petrol demands, 70 per cent of its diesel demands, and 90% of its jet fuel demands.  Our other products include CO2 for your fizzy drinks, bitumen for your roads, fuel oil for shipping and sulphur used as an ingredient in agricultural fertilisers.

Our refinery’s configuration includes a 4,700 tonne per day hydrocracker and a butane de-asphalting unit, which gives us the ability to maximise the margin between the value of crude and final products.

What We Offer

Our graduates will join our high performing refinery team late in their final year of study or early the year after their BSc studies are complete. You will be part of an engineering discipline team from day one.

You will have a thorough induction before spending six months to a year getting to know a specific part of our refinery ‘kit’ in intimate detail. You will have a line manager and a mentor who will guide you and help develop a career path which is tailored just for you.

You will be a member of an international network of graduates in the worldwide oil industry.

You will have the opportunity to play a part in a vital global industry, right in your own back yard.  And you may even get to travel and continue your learning through our alliance with Shell.
