What we do

Social development is about putting strategies in place to bring long-term benefits, while also taking short-term measures to meet the needs of today. The Ministry is dedicated to improving the social and economic lives of New Zealanders - we work collaboratively with other departments and community groups to achieve this goal.

  • We lead social development across the whole of government to achieve the Government’s social vision
  • We deliver high quality social policy research, evaluation, forecasting and modeling
  • We design and deliver social policy to increase economic growth, reduce inequality and improve the social and economic wellbeing of New Zealanders

Our service delivery areas provide income and employment support, plus lead and co-ordinate services and programs that support families. We also administer a range of specialist functions such as the Community Services Card.
