Treasury, The

Treasury has a proud history as the government’s premier adviser on economic policy, and today our 950 employees are at the forefront of Australian economic analysis and policy development. By providing advice to the Treasurer and the Australian Government, Treasury’s work directly impacts the lives of all Australians.

No matter the issue of the day, Treasury is involved. From market regulation to implementing changes to Australia’s tax system, macro policy settings to microeconomic reform, trade agreements to the global financial crisis, we play a key role. The diversity of our business is one of our greatest strengths.

Treasury offers graduates a challenging and rewarding career with the potential to shape Australia’s future through policy analysis and advice. You could find yourself working in a number of roles, from economic forecasting, promoting stable financial systems and markets in Australia, to designing tax legislation or developing social policies to improve the wellbeing of all Australians. Whatever you do, you will have a challenging andinteresting role, where you can use your current skills, as well as learning new ones.

Graduate Development Program

For the first 12 months of your career at Treasury, you will participate in the Graduate Development Program. The Program offers a range of development opportunities, including in-house and external training courses,  familiarisation tours and participation in key events such as the Budget lockup and post-Budget question time. You will also be supported by senior Treasury staff through extensive on-the-job training. The Graduate Program provides an opportunity to learn new skills, while developing those you already have.

Based in Canberra, Treasury offers a single placement graduate program. This is consistent with our approach of treating graduates as colleagues, not trainees, which means our graduates tackle the most current issues and undertake a wide range of interesting projects, gaining a wealth of experience along the way.

Career Opportunities

Commencing your career at Treasury provides excellent career prospects. Your experience at Treasury can not only open doors within Australia, but with international organisations such as the World Bank, IMF and OECD, as well as deployment opportunities in places like Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Nauru.
