Productivity Commission

The Productivity Commission is the Australian Government’s principal review and advisory body on microeconomic policy and regulation. We are an independent agency within the Treasury portfolio. Our role, expressed most simply, is to help governments make better policies, in the long-term interest of the Australian community.
The Commission is responsible for conducting public inquiries and research into a broad range of economic, social and environmental issues affecting the welfare of Australians. Areas of policy that our research covers include economic and social infrastructure, competition policy and regulation, trade, regional, environmental and natural resource issues, and general economic policy.

Our culture & values

The Productivity Commission is an intellectually fulfilling and rewarding place to work. In undertaking applied policy research, you will assess the economic, social and environmental effects of government policies and how they affect the lives of ordinary Australians. At the Commission, you will undertake a range of stimulating research including:

  • Public inquiries or research commissioned by Australian governments into economic, social and environmental issues
  • Performance monitoring and benchmarking of government businesses and service providers
  • Reviewing regulation
  • Supporting research on productivity, labour market, resource management and other key issues

The quality of our work is of the highest standard. As a consequence, governments throughout Australia continue to value our independent policy advice.
