As the largest education provider in the southern hemisphere, the NSW Department of Education and Training coordinates the delivery of education and training services from preschool to tertiary studies. NSW public school teachers command one of the highest commencing salaries of any profession, with many opportunities for professional growth, leadership advancement and lifestyle enhancement.

Salaries & benefits
In 2011, four-year trained teachers earn from $56,829 to $84,759. An attractive range of salaries for promotions positions reflects levels of responsibility.

Incentives are also offered to teachers in many rural locations and may include:

  • locality allowances valued at up to $7,000p.a.
  • vacation travel expense allowance
  • generous rental subsidies
  • one week’s additional summer vacation in certain areas of the State.

NSW public school teachers also enjoy generous leave and other entitlements.

Graduate Recruitment Program (GRP)
The GRP offers talented final year teacher education students the opportunity to obtain casual, temporary or permanent employment as a teacher. Teacher Education Scholarships
The Teacher Education Scholarship Program offers up to 300 talented students financial assistance to undertake training in subject areas of high demand including secondary mathematics and science (particularly physics) and primary or secondary special education. Eighty of these scholarships are available exclusively for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to train as teachers in primary or any secondary subject area.

Either a Bachelor of Education or a Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline plus a Diploma of Education, Bachelor of Teaching or Master of Teaching.
