Undergraduate Communications Engineer, Public Transport Authority of WA
Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Sydney

I have always had an interest in electronics and can remember dismantling all my electronic toys as a child just to see what was inside. This helped me decide that electrical engineering was the right career choice for me.

My Work Experience

After completing vacation work at the Public Transport Authority I was fortunate enough to gain a position in their Undergraduate Program. This has been a great experience and has allowed me to work part time on my days off from university. The work is fantastic and I have had the opportunity to manage my own project from start to finish. This involved the design, installation and commissioning of a radio base station to provide communications between some regional bus services. The fact that what I am doing will actually be used for many more years to come is really satisfying. The opportunity to go out on site to learn more about PTA’s operations has also been very enjoyable.

Best Advice

Try to get as much practical experience outside of university as you can. Don’t be afraid to give things a go and apply yourself to whatever you enjoy doing. Attending career fairs is an excellent way to see what jobs are out there and allows you to get a better idea of what you may want to do in the future.
