Webwise: job-hunting online

The internet is a primary resource for jobseekers. Where else can you go for such a wealth of information at the click of a mouse? To make the wonderful web work for you, however, it needs to be utilised wisely. Indiscriminate use of the web can actually hinder your job-hunting efforts, so beware and follow these tips.

Be sure to...

• Check more than one job site and find out if there are any profession/industry specific sites relevant to your career goals
• Bookmark and check sites regularly
• Consider making use of email/SMS job notification facilities
• Be creative with keyword search
• New sites are launched constantly, so keep your eyes and ears open for new jobseeking tools

Online applications

Most large private and public sector organisations use online job applications and most provide relevant advice or information on the website. There is an increasing trend for large organisations to advertise jobs on their sites.

Allow plenty of time to complete online applications. If possible, download the application so you can draft a few versions first. For more information see the Applications section in this publication.
