Andrew Hind, Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Arts

University attended: Swinburne University of Technology.

Andrew is the financial analyst for Flight Operations and Customer Service at Jetstar Airways. He previously undertook various management accounting and financial accounting roles in the Qantas Graduate Program, as well as industry-based learning (IBL) work during his studies.

What were some of the benefits of undertaking industry-based learning?

It gave me grounding for understanding the dynamics of a professional workplace, and it was invaluable practical experience for someone who was only just completing an undergraduate degree. I was also fortunate enough to learn the value and importance of forging professional relationships.

What attracted you to the Qantas Graduate Program?

I was always interested in the aviation industry, and Qantas being the largest player in Australian aviation was an obvious choice. The program itself was attractive because it was well structured; a two-year program broken down into four six-month rotations, which gives graduates as much opportunity as possible to gain different experiences within the entire Qantas Group.

What were some of your responsibilities as a graduate?

Most graduate finance roles are geared towards assisting the financial controller or finance manager in that area of the business. Most of my roles were management accounting roles, which are predominately the performance analysis aspect of financial control. Typically I would review financial data and assist in preparing financial reports.

What did the graduate program teach you about yourself and your career goals?

Apart from the technical capabilities, what I’ve taken most from this experience is a better perspective of career objectives and work/life balance. I’ve learnt that in any job evaluation the most important thing is to be valued by your employer and have respect and trust in your manager, colleagues and the values of the organisation.

How has your graduate work led into your current role with Jetstar?

I have ended up doing much similar work as I was doing on the graduate program, but on a larger scale and with more responsibility. The training I had on the program was intensive at times, which meant I had confidence in my capabilities. This made the transition to a more senior role easier.
